I did my first interview on DotNetRocks today with the topic of jQuery and Client Web Development. It went well, but I was a little nervous - eek, don't know why. I should be used to talking - but if I get nervous all that does is get me talking MORE which is NOT always a good thing, he he.
I've been reluctant to do an interview actually. Richard's been been bugging me for a while, but I've been playing hard to get mainly because I don't particularly like to do audio only interviews. I'm a highly visual person, so I gesticulate, point, pace and demonstrate but sitting down and talking to the phone or a mike has never been my forte. I've done a few Web casts/demos for products and such and even those I have a bit of a hard time with - I miss the audience feedback. In fact, I noticed that after 10 minutes or so I unconsciously was up and about pacing around the little room I was in. But at the same time Carl and Richard are extremely good at keeping things moving in the right direction so it was relatively easy to feel 'engaged'. Kudos to them.
It doesn't help to be in an unfamiliar environment. I'm in Europe at the moment staying at my girlfriend's place in Switzerland with foreign phones and a crappy Internet connection that drops every few minutes. I suppose it's better than last time I was here (5 years ago) when there was only dialup. Oops - hope she ain't reading this. We're not here long enough to really care, but it's still frustrating as heck to have even a slightly slow (about 512k) net connection and bad wireless access from the flat above, otherwise I'd get this set up right. But this is Switzerland and there are forms and regulations and it might take a month <g>... Luckily the phone was working well at least.
But I disgress. The interview went well, although there was a little topic drift. I'll be curious to see how this turns out when fully produced. I have to say that I was really impressed by Carl and Richard in keeping things moving quickly and doing background research while I was talking. I guess it seems pretty practiced/staged when you listen to finished shows but a lot of this stuff - navigating links and talking about them excitedly - is happening in real time which is impressive. In the end the whole thing was a lot of fun and flew by in what seemed like minutes.
I'm not sure yet when the interview will air but looking at other interviews I think there's about a 3 week lag time from recording to publishing. Keep an eye here or the DotNetRocks site if you're interested.
